Greek railroads are rather developed due to the peculiarities of relief. However, this means of transportation is rather useful when you have to travel from one big city to another.
Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a true cradle of Western civilization. You will hardly ever find a place, which can boast of having such a number of historical monuments! That is why Athens is a “must visit” place for every traveler.
You can reach Athens by metro, suburban electric train or taxi.
The Athens Railway Station is more commonly known as “Larissa Station” and is the main railroad terminal in Athens. It services rail runs between the city of Larissa, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, other large cities and small villages of mainland Greece.
The station also caters the needs of the suburban trains.
Until 2005, the trains had two directions to leave from the Athens Railway Station: to the north (“Larissa Station”) and to the south (“Peloponnese Station”).
The Peloponnese Railroad Station was opened on June 30, 1884. Larissa Station was built in 1904, at a very short distance from already existing one, which ensured a link with the city of Larissa –one of the most important cities in Northern Greece, at that time.
The Peloponnese Railroad Station was closed in 2005. Its responsibilities were handed over to “Larissa Station”.
The station currently includes two platforms and three tracks. However, the plan of its reconstruction presupposes availability of 7 platforms and 12 tracks.
Originally, this two-storeyed building had neoclassic exterior. After refurbishment held during ХХ century, its aesthetic character was greatly changed. In spite of numerous modernizations, the main railway station of Athens is still one of the most functional means providing facilities for traveling.
